Hike, Cook, Explore, Hike, Cook, Explore, Hike this Saturday March 13th

Posted on Mar 10 2021 - 7:43pm

Hike, Hike, Hike, and Cook A Little

On Saturday, March 13th, we'll be hiking so some Scouts can complete some Trail Cooking requirements for the Cooking Merit Badge.

Meet at 10am at the parking area at the end of Cow Pond Brook Road (just past the Groton Transfer Station and the Cow Pond Soccer Fields). We will hike for a bit to a spot to cook a trail meal and then hike some more to cook a second trail meal consistent with the trail cooking requirement:
6.d. While on a trail hike or backpacking trip, prepare and serve two meals and a snack from the menu planned for this requirement. At least one of those meals must be cooked over a fire, or an approved trail stove (with proper supervision).

All Scouts are welcome to join us on this hike. This will not be a long hike, probably about 3 miles with a couple of stops for trail meal preparation (and perhaps some time to explore the nearby quarries).

For those Scouts training for Philmont this summer, this hike will be a good opportunity to practice carrying a heavy pack over a relatively short distance.

Go past the soccer field to the end and meet at the parking lot.

Yours in Scouting,

Mr. Masterson

Advancement Information for Parents

Posted on Jan 20 2021 - 7:24pm

Hello Parents,

At the Nov 11th Troop meeting the scouts were given a presentation reviewing how advancement is tracked.  They were introduced to Scoutbook.com and the Troop's Virtual Advancement log.  The presentation is, here.  Please take a few minutes to review it.

Parents have an important role to play in enabling their scout(s) to access and update their advancement.  Scoutbook.com is the BSA's on-line advancement tracking application and scouts can not access it until a parent has logged in and sent an invitation to their scout allowing the scout to create an account.  You can choose to have your scout work with you using your account or allow them to have their own account - that is up to you.  For more information on how to setup your Scoutbook account please review the "Scoutbook and Scoutbook Invites" announcement on our website.

The Troop also uses a "Troop 437 Virtual Advancement Log" (Google form) to fill in some gaps in the Scoutbook.com system.  This on-line form fills in for the physical log book which the Troop uses but is not currently accessible due to lack of in-person meetings.  Scouts need to fill in the form when they have completed a Rank, a Merit Badge, or are signing-off a requirement for a lower rank scout.

If you have not yet done so, please help your scout access Scoutbook.com to review and update their advancement.

Yours in Scouting,

Andy McKeen

Virtual Winter Campout this Weekend

Posted on Jan 13 2021 - 8:12pm

Try your hand at some Winter camping...in the "comfort" of your own backyard.  This weekend, January 16th and 17th, will be Troop 437s second virtual campout.

Like our first virtual campout, this is a chance to get outside and pitch your tent in the safety of your back yard.  Throughout the event, we will be using Zoom and Discord to stay in touch and share our meal preparation, camp fire, and other activities.

This is a great opportunity for scouts to complete requirements that require being on a camping trip.  Scouts can complete various cooking requirements by planning a meal, cooking it with their "family" patrol, and participating in the cleanup.

Look for more information at this week's Troop meeting.
