Troop swimming event Sunday May 16th

Posted on May 12 2010 - 10:10pm

The Troop Swim event is coming up on this Sunday May 16th from 12-2 at the YMCA in Nashua. The cost is $10 per person. This is a great opportunity for the scouts to enjoy the water while hanging out with their fellow troop members.

In addition to the open swim we have reserved 2 lanes from 12-1 in order to conduct the BSA swim test. BSA rules require all Scouts to pass this test prior to participating in water outings like the Kayaking and Sailing events scheduled for May and June, and annually thereafter for participation in future water trips. People who passed this test at Wa Tut Ca this past summer or at the fall swim meeting do not need to be retested. Adults who wish to participate in water outings are also encouraged to set a good example by demonstrating their swimming skills through this test.

The requirements for the BSA swim test are:

- Jump feet first into water over the head, level off, and begin swimming.
- Swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: side, breast, trudgen, or crawl.
- Swim 25 yards using an easy, resting backstroke.
- The 100 yards must be completed without stops and must include at least one sharp turn.
- Rest by floating…Long enough to demonstrate ability to rest when exhausted.
