Memorial Day Activities for Scouts - Flag Team and Parade!

Posted on May 25 2022 - 6:03pm

We have been asked to participate in the Westford Memorial day activities on Sunday, May 29th

Parade - Scouts from all the town Troops are being asked to come out and march in the opening parade (starting at the library, marching past all the war memorials in the center of town, and then ending at the bandstand).  Please plan on attending and participating.  The time and meeting place will be announced shortly.

The Scout Flag Folding Team is coming back!  This has been a very special part of the Memorial Day ceremony that has been missing for the last several years.  We are looking for a couple of scouts to participate in the flag folding event during the Memorial Day ceremony.  If you are able and willing to attend a practice session before the event and be present on the common for the Memorial Day services please let your scoutmaster know.

Please take some time to participate in the parade and help out on the flag team to honor our veterans and our flag!

Yours in Scouting,

Scoutmaster McKeen

Mt. Washington backpacking trip - May 20th to 22nd

Posted on May 19 2022 - 2:33pm

In parallel to the Base Camp trip, we will have an option for a backpacking trip on Mount Washington.  This will be a challenging 3 day backpacking trip for experienced Scouts.  We will be hiking in to the Osgood Tent sites with full packs on Friday night, arriving after dark (2.5 miles, 1160 ft). Saturday we will climb Mount Washington via the Great Gulf Trail (5mi, 4000ft) and then continue north on the presidential ridge, with the stretch goal of making it to Mt Madison before heading back down to the Osgood Tent site. If we do the whole loop, we will be looking at 13 miles and 6300 feet of climbing (and descending). The route offers several places to cut it short depending on time and weather. Sunday, we will wake slowly and pack out to the cars, returning to town mid-afternoon.

The Northern Presidential Range offers spectacular terrain and views, but is very rough hiking.  For reference, our recent hike on Mt Monadnock was 6.5 miles in total and 1800 feet of gain.

This will be a memorable trip for those who are up for it, and for others, it will be something to aspire to.

If you are interested in attending, and have not already done so, please reach out to me or Ian Anderson before signing up.  If you are already in, please use the signup to make it official.

May trip - New England Base Camp - Signups due May 5th

Posted on May 18 2022 - 6:32pm

The May trip will be a weekend camping at the New England Base Camp (NEBC).  NEBC is operated by the Spirit of Adventure Council and provides camping opportunities along with a wide range of program activities.  Once we know who is signed up we will sign up for programs - Archery, Climbing, High Ropes, and Swimming are activities we hope to be able to offer.

Sign-ups are due by May 5th as we need to register in advance for programs and pool time.  This will be a great opportunity for scouts to complete water/swimming rank requirements!  These programs are available to us through the Adventure Card which every scout has through yearly registration fees.

We will be tent camping and cooking meals by patrol.   Meal planning will be conducted on May 12th by scouts who are signed up by then. Grub Masters will be assigned with shopping lists completed. Reimbursement Forms for Grub Master supplies can be located at the troop website.
