2025 Summer Camp at Camp Wanocksett

Great weekend in Vermont

Posted on Oct 15 2013 - 9:22pm
I hope everyone had as much fun this weekend as I did!  We had great weather for our hike and all forty of our party made it to the summit!  Great job everyone! Everyone hiked at least 6 miles and went up (and down) a 2,000ft elevation gain with some opting for longer more adventurous routes that took them on 8 and 10 mile round trips.  When I checked out of the park the Ranger asked me to pass on his thanks to the Scouts for your service work clearing the culverts on the access road.  He said theyz can quickly become clogged and if not cleared the water will wash out the road.

As for Acadia...I am sure the PLC will look to find a time when we can try that trip in the future.

I have posted pictures from the trip on the troop's Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/troop437/.  This is a closed group and if you are not a member yet you can request to be added by selecting the "Join" link in the upper right hand corner of the page.

Change of plans - new location for this weekend's trip

Posted on Oct 8 2013 - 1:46pm

The prospects of being able to camp at Acadia National Park this weekend are looking bad.  Due to that we have decided to move the trip to a new location.  I know everyone is very excited about visiting Acadia but we have found a great alternative.  Instead of Acadia we will be camping in Underhill Vermont State Park in the Green Mountain State Forest at the foothills of Mount Mansfield.  Mount Mansfield is the highest peak in the Green Mountains with a summit that features a fantastic 360 degree vista and one of the few Arctic Tundra environments in New England.

Underhill State Park is actually an hour closer to Westford then Acadia is so our travel time will be less.  Our arrival time will remain at 1:00pm on Saturday.  On Saturday we will setup camp, take a short hike in search of some boldering opportunities, cook a wonderful dinner and work on merit badges.  On Sunday we will climb Mount Mansfield.  The hike to the summit is very manageable by scouts of all ages - I first climbed Mount Mansfield when I was 9 years old and I last climbed it with my family 4 years ago when Steven was 10 years old.

We will have more information for you at the troop meeting.  If you have any questions please feel free to let me know.

Service Project - Wood stacking at East Boston Camps

Posted on Oct 1 2013 - 11:46pm

Friends of East Boston Camps will be preparing their winter firewood supply this Saturday.  They have asked for Scouts to help stack the firewood on Saturday morning starting at 10:00am.  This is a great opportunity to give back to a valuable community asset with a little bit of your time.  All scouts are encouraged to help out.  Please let the scoutmaster know if you will be able to help out.

Cape Cod Bike Trip a big sucess

Posted on Sep 17 2013 - 7:50pm

It was a wonderful weekend for biking on the Cape.  The weather was perfect and the scouts biked from Nickerson State Park in Brewster to Lecount Hollow Beach in Wellfleet and back.  They traveled over 25 miles.  The evening was spent cooking some great meals and hanging out with their fellow scouts.  Four intrepid scouts even opted to sleep outside under the stars forgoing their tents.  The Troop's new trailer made its camp-out debut and was perfect for transporting all the troop equipment.
